The Book Project is now installed across from the McMullen Gallery in the After Hours Space at the University of Alberta Hospital, 8440 112 ST NW
it runs until March 31, 2017
The Book Project is a group show by AMSA members. Including: Lindsay Knox, Phillip Kreisel, Tamara Deedman, Marc Munan, Shawn Zinyk, Robyn O'Brien, Shirley Pall, Tomas Illes, Dawn Marie Marchand, Heidi Gardner, Rhonda Rowsell, Joan Roberts, Tamera Newton, and Malachi Chapman.
A large portion of the show will involve book sculptures with additional paintings and drawings. Lindsay has been leading a book sculpture project at the Art Mentorship Society of Alberta over the last month with Tamara Deedman. The books were donated from a hospital library that recently closed its doors permanently. These psychology texts are all that's left of the collection. Lindsay Knox describes to us how she imagines the library as a place of solace for patients at one time. She says, "and while I manipulate each page I think about the types of people who might have turned them at a time of physical and mental vulnerability. I love libraries; specifically, to be ensconced in the physical evidence of ideas. They are a warm and quiet place someone can get lost temporarily. It breaks my heart these spaces are disappearing." This show celebrates libraries, learning, thought, and transformation through a variety of media and artists.
We hope you check out the show and thank you to the AMSA artists for contributing their work!
